Lila Downs in Concert : 1 June, London

Lila Downs in Concert : 1 June, London

Having captivated audiences around the world with her soaring vocal and innovative infusion of world music sounds, Lila Downs has announced she will return to London to perform at the Royal Festival Hall on June 1st.

The daughter of a Mixtec Indian woman, who ran away from her village at 15 to sing in Mexico City, and an American university professor, Lila grew up in both Minnesota and Oaxaca. Her music and vocal artistry have many influences, including the folk, ranchera and Mesoamerican music of Mexico, as well as American folk, jazz, blues and even hip hop.

Possessing one of the world’s most singular voices and innovative approaches to songwriting, Lila’s music offers striking commentaries on social conditions, reflecting migration, lost love, heartbreak, passion, justice, equality and freedom.

These compositions have seen Lila garner worldwide acclaim, with her 2011 album ‘Pecados Y Milagros’ earning both a Grammy and a Latin Grammy award. She also performed on the soundtrack to the Oscar winning film Frida, the 2002 biopic depicting the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Her most recent album, 2015’s ‘Balas Y Chocolate’ also earned a Latin Grammy, went platinum in Mexico, and was just featured in The Sunday Times’ ‘100 Best Records Of The Year’ list.

Lila has played some of the world’s most prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and even being invited to perform at the White House. Lila Downs will now treat the audience at London’s Royal Festival Hall to an evening of her world-renowned talent.
