João Donato + Janis Siegel + Diego Figueiredo : 10 July

João Donato + Janis Siegel + Diego Figueiredo : 10 July

Three generations of musicians find a meeting point between American Jazz and Brazilian music, performing material from the career of pianist João Donato, and standards from the Bossa Nova back catalogue.

In the 1950s João Donato was rejected by Rio’s nightclubs as other musicians couldn’t follow his playing and their customers couldn’t dance to it. But his sharply rhythmic style helped define the Bossa Nova feel and led him to become one of the most distinctive Latin pianists of the 20th century. Here, Jazz singer Janis Seigel’s meltingly smooth vocals flow perfectly with his playing, while Diego Figueiredo’s guitar weaves in and out, all backed by The Requinte Trio and a full Jazz band.

Siegel's recordings of Donato’s songs with The Requinte Trio sparked a collaboration tracing traditional Brazilian music to New York Jazz, exploring their shared roots, in a meeting reminiscent of some of the greatest creative partnerships of history, from Stan Getz and Frank Sinatra to Tom Jobin and João Gilberto.
