Big band La Papayera are an 8-piece ensemble who've set many stages alight including Womad, Carnaval del Pueblo, Barbican and Shepherds Bush Empire, to name a few. Led by the charismatic singer Angelica Lopez a Colombian singer/songwriter from the city of Cartagena on Colombia's Caribbean coast, Angelica grew up immersed in local folklore, dancing Cumbia and Mapalé barefoot on the streets of her hometown in Colombia.
Also joined on stage harnessing the accordion flourishes of young maestro Jose Hernando Arias (BBC Radio 3 World Routes Academy winner) including also the best Gaita player based in the UK Rafael Sarmiento the band comprises some of the finest Colombian musicians living in London all with impressive pedigrees as musicians and names on the vibrant London Latin scene. Together they'll remind you just what happy chaos a little sunshine, good spirits and great music can cause when combined mashed up together by the experts.

In Colombia, a 'papayera' group is known as a collection of local musicians for hire who play the souped-up brass-driven rhythms of cumbia and vallenato, which are so typical of Colombia's Caribbean coast. If you're planning a party in Baranquilla or any of Colombia's 'costa' towns, a papayera group guarantees you fun, mayhem and a right royal rumpus while the aguardiente flows freely.

Papayera featuring:

Rafael Sarmiento
From Cartagena city, where people and music are the harmonious blend of native Indian, African and Spanish cultures.
In 1995, Rafael left to go to the capital city, Bogota, and work with "el Ballet de Colombia" as well as with the world-famous folkloric Colombian artist: Toto la Momposina. In 1996, he toured with her in Colombia and around Europe. He also participated to the recording of her album "Pacanto", which was nominated to the Grammy in 1999. In that same year, Rafael went back to the UK to participate to the WOMAD Festival in Reading. Since then, he has been playing with numerous bands, not only gaita but also percussion.

Jose Hernando Arias
Born in London but of Colombian descent, the talented young José Hernando fell in love with Vallenato, the popular folk style from the Caribbean coast of Colombia, which he learned from watching clips online and on tapes his father brought back from Colombia. José Hernando plays in a number of Vallenato and Cumbia folk bands in London and is the musical director of Revolucion Vallenata, a multi-cultural band celebrating the Vallenato tradition. José Hernando is also currently studying for a degree in Guitar at the Tech Music School in West London.
