Conference: The Colonisation Of The Americas. 25/3/2013

The Spanish monarchy was without precedent or parallel in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries – the only global empire of land and sea. How did it happen? How did it work over such a vast swathe of the early modern world, despite the poverty of resources, communications, manpower, and technology? The question baffled contemporaries who experienced and observed the empire, and no historian has answered it convincingly. The lecturer proposes a new approach and hazards a new solution.

Felipe Fernandez-Armesto is a British historian and author of The Spanish Armada (1990), Columbus (1991), Pathfinders: A Global History of Exploration (2007) and many others.

A reception with wine will follow the talk which is included in the ticket price.
