Yuri Betancourt [Acoustic sessions] : 28/03/13 - FREE

Join us this Thursday 28th March to enjoy our best latin singers and songwriters based in London. Our next guest is Chilean multi-instrumentalist Yuri Betancourt-Garcia. He began studying the Andean flute (kena) at school aged 11, under the direction of Miguel Angel Soto Aceitón. This early experience awoke his passion for music and since then Yuri has dedicated himself to developing his musical skills and knowledge and in particular his expertise in a wide range of traditional string and wind instruments including guitar, charango, Venezuelan cuatro, kena, panpipes and percussion. As a young performer he performed in a folk group at many musical festivals and events throughout Chile, including at a ceremonial occasion for the Chilean president in Santiago.
His professional career began when he toured Europe performing in various theatres, clubs, and festivals and spending some time playing in the important European musical centre of Barcelona. He then settled for a period in the UK, establishing his own folk ensemble in Norfolk. Between 2003 and 2008 Yuri was based in Chile, performing in various venues in the central region of the country before returning to the UK to live in Edinburgh and joining Quimantu in 2009.

In 2012 he did a solo show alongside the most recognized latin american artists at the Day of the Indigenous resistance in London as a means to recognize the Americas’ fight for self-determination, unity and cultural and human diversity. The day also serves to vindicate the indigenous peoples of the American continent and as well as the contributions made by the African, Asian and European culture and peoples.

Nowdays Yuri supported bands like Lokandes playing charango, guitar and bass in different shows and becoming part of the band at the London Olympics shows at BT London live 2012. He is also part of a new project called Dandaluz a fusion of rumba, funk, pachanga, flamenco.

In this special show at Cafe Chula Yuri will present part of his own original repertoire as a solo musician, also including some classics of the latin american music from folk to rock and pop music.

Our friends of Cafe Chula will be running drinks like Margaritas and Tequila + the best mexican food and more specials options to accompany the music. Don't miss!!
