What’s Vallenato?
It's fabled that a ship carrying a cargo of accordions ran aground on its way to the new world and that these instruments were destined to be carried by the waves to the northern-most tip of Colombia's Caribbean coast. A romanticized story of the beginnings of Colombia's love affair with this unpretentious instrument that has shaped the identity of one of Latin America's most popular folk traditions.

Although Vallenato existed before the arrival of the accordion, usually used as a way of telling stories by cattle farmers that travelled the Caribbean lowlands, it's this instrument that has now become synonymous with the genre. In Europe this instrument is usually associated with slow tempo music but in this part of the world the rhythms gyrate at impressive speeds, so much so that the instrument makers in Germany upon hearing this music categorically denied that it was the same instrument.

This April 2013 will be the 46th edition of the Vallenato Legend festival in its home of Valledupar, Colombia. However, this music has gradually permeated on to the national and international arena. Just a week ago Miami celebrated its 8th Vallenato Festival at Bayfront Park, where the US Congress honoured the maestro Jorge Celedón with a scroll of recognition for his talent. Last year Blur's lead vocalist Damon Albarn presented British homegrown talent, Jose Hernando Arias Noguera, with the BBC World Routes Academy Award for "Best young world music artist".

The 27th April 2013 brings the heat of the Colombian Caribbean closer to home, with the 2nd edition of London's Vallenato Festival taking place in Harlesden's old Coliseum cinema. To guarantee your place please book in advance here:
