Lokkhi Terra + Trio Mali Latino ft. Omar Puente : 08/06/13

Lokkhi Terra are one of London's best-kept secrets – and probably the world's best Afrobeat-Cuban-Bangladeshi group. The man behind it all is Bangladeshi Kishon Khan. He has formidable Latin piano skills, learnt in Cuba. Khan has assembled a superb band, 'widely acknowledged as an international force to be reckoned with' (Songlines).

Another fine Latin jazz pianist, British-born Alex Wilson, is behind the Trio Mali Latino. Steeped in the Afro-Cuban/Caribbean tradition, Alex presents a touring band drawn from his superb Mali Latino album ('Definitely on my shortlist for our 2010 World Music Album of the year' Glyn Phillips, Expect jazz and Latin rhythms stripped back to their African roots – yet fresh, vibrant and definitely modern. Wilson is joined by Malian-born Ahmed Fofana (vocals, guitar, balafon, ngoni, djembe) and Venezuelan-born Edwin Sanz (percussion). A fitting finale to Songlines Encounters, these three musicians showcase a multitude of instruments, and welcome a very special guest – virtuoso Cuban violinist, Omar Puente – the man 'with a heart that beats with a Cuban rhythm'.
