Gandaia Arts : Dance & Drumming workshops

In collaboration with Brixton Come Together and Brixton Green we bring you the best of Dance and Drumming from Northeast of Brazil.

DRUMMING

Maracatu and other rhythms from Pernambuco will be presented on the 1st session run by Maracatudo Mafua musicians

Samba reggae in its full glory and power will be develop by Dende nation HasTings - St. Leonards - Bexhill musical director - Mac PretoVelho de Dende

DANCE

Mariana Rabello Pinho is running the dance sessions with a mix of cheerful, energetic and passionate vibes towards the rhythms and the characters that each one represents!

The sessions will happen EVERY TUESDAY from June 17th until Sept 16th as the participants are encouraged to take part of both Notting Hill Carnival Parade on Sunday 24th of August and Brixton Come Together on September 21st.

Maracatu from 7:00- 8:30pm
Samba reggae from 8:30- 10:00pm

COST

£6 per session £10 for both
£1 extra for musical instrument hire

Drummers please bring earplugs
Dancers please wear comfy clothes and a pair of old socks!

NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL

Both groups are taking part of the Carnival as guests for Cocoyea London Mas Band.

Dexter Khan and the Cocoyea family has welcomed and supported our projects and we can only thank them for the opportunity!

MARACATUDO MAFUA

This year Mafua is having a theme and thanks to Arts Council England the project named "Yamuna Yemanja- When India meets Brazil" will be developed.

The aim is to start a cultural dialogue between Indian and brazilian culture via kathak and maracatu and its representations via Indian Gods and Orixas.

Using kathak and maracatu in this dialogue, we have gathered the following artists in this process.
Guest groups includes Daka Doum ( Cornwall), Maracatu Cruzeiro do Sul ( Brighton) and more TBA

On wednesday Aug 20th the Pre Carnival Night at @Rich Mix will bring the dance and music aspects to the live sets of Mafua and other acts soon TBA.


DENDE

In its 2nd year taking part of Notting Hill the group welcomes othe samba reggae groups from UK such as Oya Batucada and Daka Doum to join the bloco which will be lead by Marivaldo Paim ( Ile Ilê Aiyê - Oficial)

The powerful rhythm and message of samba reggae is the triggering point of a movement towards the resistance of Afro Brazilian culture and the wealth of elements presented in both beats and movements.
The group parades on Monday Aug 25th.

Soon we will be announce the full program but we welcome you all to play, dance and make this happen!

CARNIVAL COSTS
The fee to take part on each group is £40 per person and covers:
* The use of costume
* Final rehearsal
* T shirt
* Parade refreshments, insurance and production
