Criolo (Brazil) in Concert 18/11/12

Tonight the great musician Criolo from Brazil will give an special concert supporting Ethiopian artist Mulatu Astatke at the famous Koko venue in London.  Criolo became Brazil’s hottest export of the year - the São Paulo rapper, composer and urban poet Criolo who makes a welcome return to London following his appearance at the Barbican’s Gilberto Gil hosted Back to Black Festival in the summer.
One of five brothers and sisters born to migrants from the North East of Brazil and the commercial hub of São Paulo, Kleber Gomes a.k.a. Criolo was born in the 'Favela das Imbuias', one of the many shanty towns that span the city. Aged 11, Rap music was Criolo’s first love however, in the 25 years that followed his style and expression matured and developed, drawing ever more influence from the worlds of Samba, Afrobeat and Reggae.

Through his music Criolo brings a message of hope for the youth of Brazil, exploring stories of poverty, police violence and social discrimination.

'Possibly the most important figure on the Brazilian pop scene.' Caetano Veloso
A’ mindblowing album with far too many hooks and ideas to drift into obscurity. This really feels like the start of something special, possibly a point where the multiple cultures, religions, traditions and people of Sao Paulo find an album that represents them as a whole. Sounds and Colours on Criolo’s Nó Na Orelha.
Part of the London Jazz Festival in association with BBC 3.
